Giving Something Back
By Judi Baron

There are many people volunteering their time in different ways—the individual
choices are numerous. Probably the best reason people do it is to help others and
give something back to their community.

Here in the Santa Clarita Valley we have only one hospital, which is a nonprofit and
serves the entire Santa Clarita Valley. Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has
opportunities for Belcaro residents with some extra time to meet new people, have
new experiences, and gain personal satisfaction from knowing you are helping
others.

Volunteers are an essential part of making sure that patients and families have the
very best experience at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. The hospital is
striving for excellence and it welcomes community involvement. There are over 21
different volunteer opportunities available at HMNMH from the gift shop to the women’
s unit. You can help in a department that is related to patient care or one that needs
assistance with directing visitors and families such as information desk, family
waiting rooms, hospital shuttle and more.

It is a proven fact that when you retire it is best to stay active. Why not do it in your
community as part of a great team. Currently we have about 6 Belcaro residents in
the volunteer program, all enjoying varied experiences and getting more fulfilled each
day. That is only one of the perks you will experience. So make some positive
additions to your life—explore the opportunities at Henry Mayo either as a volunteer
or by joining the hospital auxiliary. Contact the Volunteer Services Department by
phone, (661) 253-8051, or by e-mail, garsideme@henrymayo.com.

See you in your snazzy blue jacket that only special people wear.

    Support the Troupes
    by Michele Avignone

For those of us that attended the funeral procession of the soldier that was killed in
Afghanistan, it was such a reminder that there are many young military personnel
that would greatly appreciate our support.

With overwhelming gratitude, thank you ladies for the wonderful work you are doing
for our members of the armed forces.

Last month was the fourth month we met, and thus far we have collected 31 scarves,
9 hats, numerous letters of encouragement, soaps, magazines and lotion. More than
that, you have given your time and love and you are true patriots!

This is an ongoing project, so come to the Grove House the first Monday of the
month, 9-9:30 and write a note, crochet or knit hats and scarves to send, or drop off
donations or just say, “Hi.”

Examples of donations would be Crystal Light, hot chocolate packets, herbal or plain
tea (helps masquerade the awful taste of the water), Readers Digest, nuts, hygiene
items, power bars, paper, pens (greatly needed) stationary and envelopes so they
can write home, foot hygiene items (socks, foot powder), moisturizing lotion, and …
use your imagination. Thanks and hope to see you Monday, April 5.

Items can be donated to Sandy Schulze or Michele Avignone at any time. From May 1
through May 31 (Memorial Day), there will be a box in the Grove House for donations
in honor of Memorial Day. We welcome the Belcaro women to join us for a few
minutes or a few hours.

Thanks to Our Deliver Team

We are indeed fortunate to have a great group of volunteers who never receive any
recognition or acknowledgement. In fact, most of the time they aren’t even seen as
they go about their monthly duty of delivering your copy of The Belcaro Reporter to
your home. So, the next time you see your friendly delivery person, you just might
want to say, “Thanks.” After all, they do deliver your newsletter “through rain, or snow,
or bleak of night” just to help you stay informed of Belcaro happenings.

A special thanks to Maureen Todden for coordinating the whole delivery process.
